Lighten Up Your Lifestyle

TURN AN OLDER, DATED HOME INTO YOUR DREAM HOME.

Through the years, styles have come and gone. Some we would like to revisit, but some we want to completely forget. Home interiors are no different. Many homes of the 70s and early 80s were designed with unusual tile patterns, dark paneling, shag carpet and dark wood cabinets. You’ve seen these kinds of homes on popular home makeover shows…they’re dark, heavy and definitely dated.

But these homes can be saved. Once homeowners decide to embrace the idea of remodeling versus starting from scratch, existing homes can emerge with a lighter, brighter facelift.

Of course, the key to any successful remodel is finding a team that will share the homeowner’s vision. A good builder can see through the structure and bones of an existing house to determine what can go and what must stay. A good interior designer can suggest improved materials that will make a remodel more efficient, comfortable, user-friendly and attractive.

Take the case of this Brams Point gem. When Ben Kennedy of Brighton Builders and Kelly Caron of Kelly Caron Designs collaborated on this remodel project, the result was a luxurious home minus a traditional heaviness. Comfortable and light, “every aspect of the home accentuates the clients’ tastes,” said Kennedy.

Caron’s magic showed in the finishes. From lighting and tile to cabinetry and hardware, her design choices emphasized the clients’ desire for a functional, comfortable living space. “We started with neutral fabrics with texture or small print throughout the living room, dining room and kitchen areas. We layered warm creamy whites with caramel accents. It was important to use the neutral colors in a balanced way throughout the open living floor plan,” Caron said.

If remodeling is on your horizon, but the home you own seems hopelessly outdated, don’t give up. Find a team who understands your needs and desires, and together you can make your old home your dream home again.
