Focus on the Bath

In 2015, attention shifts to the bath as homeowners modernize their retreats subdued colors and sleek details.

For years, the kitchen has been the home hot spot to watch for developing new trends and technology. But in 2015, attention will shift to a different room of the house – the bathroom. From sinks to new color schemes and tubs to tiles, designers expect to see homeowners improve their bathrooms with major overhauls or at least significant upgrades. According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s style report and home decorating trends, homeowners will go about the task in some very specific ways.

Out with the old, in with the new. It’s the year for a fresh start, and the bathroom is the perfect place to do it. As people move towards a simpler lifestyle, their homes and upgraded rooms reflect the change in a more contemporary way. This doesn’t mean that cozy, rustic charm gets completely traded in for ultra-modern glamor, but bathrooms will take on cleaner, clutter free lines and a more minimalist approach.

Soaking tubs rule. For some time rain showers have been all the rage, but these days homeowners want to sit and relax in a soaking tub. These freestanding additions to the bathroom are visually appealing and transform the bathroom into a luxury getaway. They are becoming so popular, designers actually expect a decline in standard tubs with shower-surrounds.

Stand-alone Sinks. Find somewhere else to store all the toiletries because under the sink is losing popularity. As opposed to mass-produced cabinet vanities, homeowners are opting for free-standing sinks that have interesting leg shapes or are made from reclaimed furniture pieces. Floating vanities that are custom made to suit the homeowner’s aesthetic are also in demand. The downside of this trend is lack of storage. If cabinet space is a necessity in your bathroom, consider a sleek floating vanity with some minimal cabinet storage underneath or a shaving cupboard – also making a resurgence – that offers storage behind it.

Color me Gray. Soothing grays and muted colors have become quite popular in bathrooms replacing traditional white, beige and blue. As homeowners seek to create a quiet spa-like environment, colors will continue to trend toward gray-blue, gray-green and gray brown. These colors pair wonderfully with light tiles and cabinets. If you’re worried a gray palette will make your bathroom feel flat and lifeless, introduce slicks of white to cut through the moody hue and create a sophisticated look. Or try energizing the room by adding a splash of bold, eye-popping color in a feature wall or tile mosaic.

Stone Surfaces. Granite countertops have become the most popular stone choice for kitchens and baths, but there are other options available. Expect to see quartz make a dynamic appearance in bathrooms this year.

Clever water control. Say goodbye to basic shower and basin faucets, and hello to smart, user-friendly fixtures (such as thermostatic mixers; mixers that control multiple water sources; and touchscreen-operated showers) that give users more control over the flow, mix and temperature of water.

Feature tiles. Statement-making floor and wall tiles proved popular in 2014, and this striking look doesn’t appear to be leaving in a hurry. Tile provides a great design opportunity when working with challenging bathrooms and small spaces.

Natural beauty. In true spa-like spirit, homeowners are trying to get back in touch with nature. What better way to create a welcoming and serene space than to take inspiration from the great outdoors by using  earthy materials like natural stone or wood-look tiles and planks.
