Architect Michael Kronimus creates a personal home perfect for gatherings
Architects today are commissioned to design and develop personal homes on a daily basis, but the process becomes even more exciting and overwhelming when that architect is the personal owner of a new residence himself in Palmetto Bluff. Over the past year, we followed Michael Kronimus with KRA Architecture and Design as he gave us a weekly glimpse into the trials and tribulations of personally designing his own special home. The home was designed to be a new modern approach to living, where the family could congregate not only inside the residence, but comfortably outside in an enclosed personal courtyard.
Michael told us that even though he designs many different styles of homes for his clients–including specialized “lowcountry” which is favored in this area–he wanted to go outside his comfort zone to experiment with something a little more urban and edgy.
This house grabs your attention from the time you start to glimpse the exterior coming down the driveway, and holds it as you progress through the courtyards and glass atriums into the chef’s kitchen. Finally, you find yourself in an amazing family gathering space where all can gather to cook their own wood-fired pizzas.
The last year was a tough one for all those around the country withCOVID-19, and Michael goes on to explain the main reason behind his design. “COVID opened our eyes into the fact that families need to be close together while social distancing from others. We developed a home where the family can interact internally and also externally as we developed an amazing outdoor courtyard experience where they could all gather together to relax, swim, lounge and be one with each other with protection.” Michael goes onto explain that this home is unique and one of a kind in not only architectural design, but also technology, which is a key component for this project. “This home is a true oasis in the fact that it can sustain itself in case of a hurricane, power outages and such. The home can be completely controlled and monitored from anywhere in the world and adjusts each minute to climate, sun, weather and even security protocols.”
KRA Architecture and design has been serving the lowcountry for over30 years and specializes in residential and commercial architecture. Please continue to follow all our updates as we are welcoming the completion of this amazing home in late spring.
