Ready to embark on a new pool adventure? We’ve got tips to help you navigate the waters.
South Carolina’s favorite season – pool season – is on the horizon, and homeowners are dreaming of idyllic days spent lounging by the poolside. But how does that dream become a reality?
Navigating pool construction can be both exciting and overwhelming. However, with a clear vision and an understanding of the design and build basics, headaches become far less likely and decisions much easier.
Here’s what you need to know before embarking on your pool-building journey.
What is my project budget?
One of the first steps in a stress-free project is determining your budget. Your budget influences every aspect of the project, from the size and type of the pool to the materials used and the features included. Establishing your budget upfront helps empower partners with clear guidelines for realizing your vision, while keeping decisions strategic and projects on track.
How do I select a pool-building partner?
Choosing the right partner is crucial to success. A reputable company not only has a track record of delivering high-quality results but likely has built a reliable partner network to assist throughout the project. These partners can include contractors, architects, landscape architects, engineers and more. Each can be essential to a safe and durable installation that also meets your local ordinance’s standards.
Online reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations can be vital in helping narrow down your choice. An established pool builder who is proud of their work will also want to feature it on their website. Look for a project gallery to preview the quality and craftsmanship of their builds (and maybe find inspiration for your own pool).
Find a team you like? Meet with them in person! Many pool builders have showrooms where you can explore their products in person. These meetings are also excellent for getting to know your potential partner. You will collaborate with your pool-building partner for several months, so do not be afraid to test the waters before committing.
ABOVE Incorporating unique water features, such as waterfalls or fountains, can take your pool to the next level. This creates a luxurious, spa-like escape in your own backyard.
What pool style should I choose?
There are several pool styles to consider, each with its unique features and benefits. The “right” style for you will ultimately come down to the pool’s intended use and the needs of its swimmers.
Elevated and inground pools are popular choices, offering versatility and customization options. Zero-entry pools provide a gradual slope into the water, ideal for families with young children or those with mobility issues. Infinity pools offer stunning visual effects, while plunge pools are perfect for small spaces or relaxation.
Is “style” the only design choice I need to make?
There is much more to pool design than choosing the “style.” Of course, that is one of the best parts about the process. Each pool is a reflection of its owner’s personality, taste and story. Get creative by selecting finishes, lighting and other features that speak to you.
This also includes your pool’s shape. From classic geometrics to freeform designs that mimic natural bodies of water, the possibilities are endless. Consider features like infinity edges, tanning ledges or integrated spas, which can elevate the pool experience. Environmental and architectural harmony with your home and landscape is key to creating a cohesive and appealing outdoor living space.
Finally, what pool type is right for me?
We have seen and worked with many materials throughout our long history. Some are suited for more standard projects, while others are ideal for that luxuriously custom look. When planning your pool, the material you choose significantly impacts aesthetics, maintenance, durability and design flexibility.
Vinyl liner pools are budgetfriendly and offer a smooth surface, however, they are less durable than other options, with liners needing replacement approximately every five to nine years.
Fiberglass pools are easy to install and maintain, and they resist algae growth. Unfortunately, they come in limited designs and sizes due to pre-molding and transport challenges. While these types suit some, the premolded nature of vinyl and fiberglass pools offers little creative license. This is why we prefer to work with concrete.
Concrete pools are the only type we work with. These pools excel in durability and design flexibility, allowing for total customization in shape, size, depth and a wide array of materials that can be included. Concrete pools can be integrated seamlessly into any landscape, reflecting personal style while promising longevity. They require a higher initial investment and have longer construction times, but the outcome is a unique and enduring pool.
While concrete pools demand regular maintenance, their adaptability and robustness make them a worthwhile choice for homeowners looking to invest in a luxurious, long-lasting, tailor-made oasis.
Anything else?
Above all else, enjoy the process! Remember, you are not the pool construction expert (and no one expects you to be). Your role in the project is to simply guide your designers and support your builders along the way. Your vision is their goal, after all.
